I did not know Mike Rowland, but every year the race run in his memory humbles me. Even for those of us who were just fans, Mike made coming to the races fun. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and a wink to the "wiseguys" as he left the paddock. Hang around that paddock long enough and you begin to connect jocks with their families. It was fun to watch him play with his kids and eventually ride horses that his wife trained. I was stunned when I heard about his tragic accident. It still gives me shivers.
A quick glace at Saturday's card -
Race 4
I don't see anything in here that can challenge DOWN THE ROAD for the early pace. That should be the key to victory. Took the lead early and romped gate to wire ($3.20)
Race 7 - Mike Rowland Memorial Stakes
JODY'S POWER should make the lead or pin the other early runner, BEST AIR, to what has looked, to me, like dead rail for a week or so. I think whoever makes the lead at the top of the stretch wins this one. I'm leaning "JODY'S" way. If CATLAUNCH can get it done, his supporters can have my money with a smile, he is easy to love. Fried himself leading the first quarter in 22 flat, then quit (8th by 25)
That first quarter was officially 22.04, the fastest first quarter of the meet in races going six furlongs. 45.00 seconds was also the quickest half mile in 2012. RAISE THE REWARD covered the six furlongs in 70.44, another fastest mark. CATLAUCH's time of 70.64 was the second best recorded at this distance. FUNDY had run 70.86 winning a $10k OC on 12May.
Race 8
MONTY CAT might have run against tougher on 7May and could be the fittest in the nightcap. Pressed the pace throughout, but couldn't get up (2nd by a half)
