Thistledown on the road

I always look forward the annual "retreat" that my wife and I take in a secluded cabin along the shore of Lake Erie, in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Intermittent mobile phone connections and no wi-fi are both delightful when avoiding daily responsibilities. However, playing the races from this spot has always been unthinkable.

Sunday was day one of our vacation. We spent it hip to hip. Early morning exercise, beach combing, and a winery visit kicked off the week. A cool breeze lasted all afternoon, making sipping Maker's Mark, enjoying a couple cigars and some Dick Francis all tasty. Even the six mile hike after dinner didn't strain our long relationship. It was a great day.

This morning I slept in, hitting the trail a half our, or so, after my mate who was off and running before 6am. Back by seven, we attacked a different beach in search it's hidden treasure, "beach glass." The hunt was fruitful. Now it is time to chase our individual pleasures. Her's are bead shops, jewelry making, and reading. My favorite diversion is playing the ponies, currently untangling the mystery that is Thistledown captures me daily.

2012 has armed me with a seductive iPad. McDonald's offers free wi-fi. So I am "off to the races." The goal is to play only a race  or two from any one place,  before looking to score from a new location. Driveable "Mac's" will be my default locations, but I hope to uncover some "off the beat" spots as the racing card presses on.

Win or lose, our day will end the romantic deck  behind a seafood restaurant, sharing stories from completely diverse afternoons. Not bad for a couple born in the fourties, but still enjoying life as teenagers.

This post was sent from the parking lot of the Geneva State Park marina.
